The History....

The modern poster (as we know it today) was 'born' in 19th century Paris. French artist, Jules Cheret pioneered The '3 stone lithographic process'.

The invention of lithography was a really big deal! It meant artists were able to develop new design techniques and print their posters without the huge expense. These posters of vivid colour, text and graphics were designed and used to promote theatres and shows. They are considered to be known as beginning of the modern age of advertising.

Before that, posters were really nothing more than posted bills and placards, which were only really used to make announcements. They were made of wood or even metal engraving with very little colour or design. This was a slow and expensive process and the final printed piece was really quite boring to look at.

Jules Cheret paved the way for artists to adopt the poster art technique. He designed more than 1000 posters over his time, including the well-known poster he crafted for the opening of the Moulin Rouge in 1889.

20th Century and beyond

Over the next and 130 years, the look and role of the poster would change. It would be heavily influenced by the art movement of the time as well as political and social events.

World War 1 saw the humble poster take on a whole new focal role - propaganda. They had become an integral part of the war effort. Posters were communicating everything from recruitment drives and fund raising through to provoking and encouranging anger towards the enemy.

With each passing decade, posters have played a part in shaping the way consumers view products, services, events and moments in history.

Even in today's digital world, the poster is still a staple tool of business advertising and marketing. They play a noticable and cost effective role in reaching your target audience, no matter what message you're trying to get across.
